With options like JUVÉDERM® and Restylane®, New Jersey collagen enhancements and wrinkle treatments are easier than ever before. Unlike many other New Jersey plastic surgery and medical spa practices, Dr. D'Amico personally performs all injectable treatments instead of having them done by an aesthetician or other office staff member.
In many cases, Dr. D'Amico combines dermal fillers with New Jersey BOTOX® Cosmetic. BOTOX relaxes facial muscles while fillers fill in the creases. In general, BOTOX is used to address wrinkles and lines on the upper portion of the face while dermal fillers improve the appeance of lines on the cheeks and around the mouth.
JUVÉDERM® Injectable Gel is a soft gel made of hyaluronic acid. It is manufactured by the same company that makes BOTOX Cosmetic, and it is used to restore your skin's volume and smooth away facial wrinkles and folds, like your "smile lines" or the creases that run from the bottom of your nose to the corners of your mouth. It's also been found extremely effective for plumping lips. It can last up to about 12 months.
Restylane® is hydrophilic, which means it's "water loving," and as such, it will attach to many times its own weight in water. Even as the hyaluronic acid begins to disappear, each molecule will attach to more water. The hyaluronic acid in Restylane has been modified slightly to last longer than your own hyaluronic acid. Although a tiny needle is used, Restylane is slightly thicker than the other fillers and, therefore, can be more uncomfortable when injected. Fortunately, Restylane can be mixed with a little Lidocaine to minimize discomfort during the injection. Restylane is often used in the nasolabial folds (the marionette lines from the nose to the mouth) and is also as a lip filler. Restylane lasts about 4 to 8 months.
Radiesse® is composed of tiny, smooth calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres. The microspheres form a scaffold through which your body's own collagen grows, thus achieving the desired long-term effect. It's very effective for laugh lines, nasolabial folds and wrinkles around the nose and mouth. It is not generally used in the lips because it creates more discomfort than some of the other fillers, and your lips are highly sensitive. Because Radiesse is a thicker filler than Restylane, it's reserved for use in deeper tissues. An example would be to fill out the area around the cheekbones or to fill in scars. A local anesthetic (like you'd receive in your dentist's office) is used when injecting Radiesse. On average, Radiesse is the longest-lasting of the fillers, maintaining fullness in the wrinkles for up to 5 years.
Perlane®, like Restylane, is made of hyaluronic acid. Natural hyaluronic acid already exists in your body; it's what gives volume and fullness to your skin. The hyaluronic acid in Restylane and Perlane has been modified to last longer than your body's hyaluronic acid. Perlane is also hydrophilic, meaning that its three dimensional structure allows it to bind many times its own weight in water. As the hyaluronic acid begins to dissolve, each molecule binds to more water which helps to maintain skin volume. Because it's particles are larger, you can expect your results to last for about 6 to 9 months.
Sculptra® was originally created for HIV patients, because their faces would lose significant volume as a result of their illness. This volume was replaced with Sculptra. Therefore, it is often compared to a "liquid facelift" since it is perfect for under the eyes, cheek hollows, and temples, as well as to treat deep skin laxity and wrinkles and because it's very long-lasting, ie, up to 3 or 4 years.
Fat Grafting has been used for many years to fill wrinkles and sculpt the face, including nasolabial folds and the area underneath the eyes that sometimes looks sunken by the aging process. By extracting some unwanted fat from the patient and processing it, the fat is then injected into deep into the facial structures. Fat in some areas will be permanent, but depending on the patient, may need to be repeated as the body may absorb some or all of it.
How It's Done
The injections themselves take only about fifteen minutes to half an hour, and the results of fillers appear immediately.
You might have a slight redness around the injection site for the first two hours. It will be obvious to you when you should come in for another treatment, as the wrinkles will begin to reappear. Because our office is very busy, we suggest that you make the appointment for your next treatment when you have each treatment.
If you have had Restylane, we recommend that you avoid exercise for 24 hours to ensure good absorption. Restylane produces instant results, though there may be some slight redness for the first few hours. If the injection site is uncomfortable, we suggest a cold compress. You will likely wish to schedule your Restylane injections about every six months.
Radiesse is the longest-lasting of the injections, and is generally repeated every 18 months. Some redness will be present for the first few hours, and you may have slight swelling around the injection sites themselves. However, a cold compress will help reduce the swelling and discomfort.
