New Jersey Face Lift
A New Jersey face lift is one of the most common procedures to reposition tissues and give the face a naturally rejuvenated appearance. The goal of facial rejuvenation is primarily restoration. With aging, two basic things happen: the first is that the connective tissue attachments between the soft tissues and the facial skeletal stretch out, causing the skin and tissues to move out of position, creating heavy nasolabial folds, jowls and the turkey bands in the neck. The other aging change is a loss of actual tissue volume (collagen and fat).
Face lifts are surgical procedures performed to reposition the musculature, fat, and skin in men and women who are experiencing signs of aging, with the goal to restore the patient's facial appearance to approximately that of 10 to 15 years prior. The public has been exposed to many different kinds of face lifts which may have poor results, including thread lifts, contour lifts, lifestyle lifts, etc. Dr. Richard D'Amico has performed thousands of effective face lift procedures for his New Jersey and New York metro area patients. All of these procedures employ proven techniques rather than "the newest thing" on TV and in ads. Very simply, he does not take shortcuts in his procedures. A face lift is a very complex procedure that requires the skill of an experienced and highly skilled plastic surgeon. Laser procedures are often performed with facelifts and may further enhance results.
Who is a Good Candidate?
Healthy men and women experiencing signs of facial and neck aging who wish to restore the appearance of freshness and youth to their faces are ideal candidates for this procedure. BOTOX® Cosmetic and dermal fillers can provide some improvement during the early aging process but cannot accomplish what surgery can do which is, repositioning the tissues to their original position. Generally, face lifts and neck lifts are performed after the age of 40.
How It's Done
There are a broad variety of names for face lifts and neck lifts, but truthfully, there are only a few actual procedures that are done, depending on your level of facial aging. As with all our surgical procedures, we perform each face lift here in New Jersey at our nationally accredited on-site surgical suite, with the patient under general anesthesia.
To reposition tissue so you look both younger and natural, Dr. D'Amico repositions the muscle, connective tissue, fat and skin. The goal is to restore the youthful appearance without changing the appearance — you still look like you but your "younger you." If you saw one of Dr. D'Amico's patients in a restaurant, your first thought would not be "she's had work" but instead, "my, she's aged very gracefully."
In any face lift or neck lift procedure, the repositioned tissues can be strong connective tissue in the face (called the SMAS) or the platysma muscle in the neck. This involves moving important structures back to where they belong. The jowls are moved back up into the cheeks, restoring fullness and the clean line of the jaw. Dr. D'Amico then returns the nasolabial folds and cheek up to the cheek bone, which restores the soft tissues to where they were in earlier years. The bands in the neck are improved as the muscle is repositioned, further cleaning up the neck. Only then do we address the skin, which is never pulled but just draped over the face, trimmed carefully and then sutured, resulting in less visible scars.
Each face lift procedure is individually tailored to each patient. Total facial rejuvenation may include eyelid surgery, a brow lift, or skin enhancement treatments like laser skin resurfacing. Dr D'Amico will discuss all the options at your consultation, and will decide with you which procedures will create the most desirable final result.
Recovery after a Face Lift in New Jersey
Most patients recover from face and neck lift procedures within about 7-10 days. There is little to no discomfort, though swelling can be substantial. Therefore, you will wish to take time from work and social activities for approximately 1-2 weeks and allow at least a month before major social events.
Face and neck lifts generally give long-lasting results. However, all else being equal, the younger the patient the longer the results last. Smoking and extended sun exposure that could damage the skin are inadvisable after any facial rejuvenation procedure. Dr. D'Amico advises his patients to eliminate strenuous physical activity for 3-4 weeks following their procedure to ensure the longest lasting results.
