For our patients in the New York metro area and New Jersey, a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) reduces the amount of excess abdominal skin and fat to create a flatter, more appealing abdomen. Abdominal muscle tightening can also improve the new waistline and restores the anatomy to a pre pregnancy or pre weight gain state. A tummy tuck can address all 3 layers of the abdominal wall: the skin, the fat and the muscle, or can be customized by Dr. D'Amico to enhance only 1 or 2 layers as needed. After carefully reviewing your cosmetic concerns, Dr. D'Amico will make this decision with you at your consultation.

Who is a Good Candidate?
Ideal candidates for abdominoplasty are healthy men and women who have (A) experienced weight gain and loss cycles, (B) pregnancy or (C) natural aging, that resulted in sagging, stretched skin and stretching of the abdominal muscles. If you have lost weight by diet and exercise or surgical assistance (Lap Band or gastric bypass), Dr. D'Amico recommends that you lose most of the weight you desire before undergoing an abdominoplasty in his New Jersey surgical center. If you are not at ideal and stable weight, Dr. D'Amico can employ lipoplasty or liposuction to the torso to remove the local collection of fat and allow the abdominoplasty to be performed sooner.
Tummy tuck procedures are particularly popular for women who have had children. A "Mommy Makeover" generally incorporates abdominoplasty along with the liposuction and a breast enhancement procedure such as a breast lift and/or breast augmentation with implants in New Jersey. These combined procedures help to restore your body's contours and undo the changes of pregnancy.
Dr. D'Amico also performs a Menopausal Makeover, which is a comprehensive program of diet, exercise and local body contouring to remove unwanted body contour changes many women experience with menopause.
How It's Done
Dr. D'Amico performs abdominoplasty procedures in his nationally accredited (AAAASF), onsite surgical facility under appropriate anesthesia. In general, he will make an incision in the groin area (bikini line) and lift the skin to expose the muscle layer. Any muscle separation is repaired and the skin is redraped, removing the excess before sutures are applied. Depending on your unique cosmetic needs, liposculpting may be performed to put the finishing touches on your new contour.
Recovery will require that you avoid heavy work or heavy exercise for 4-8 weeks. If muscle work is done, a pain pump dripping Novocain on the muscle will allow for a comfortable recovery. The final outcome will depend on the resolution of swelling, but is usually seen in 4-6 weeks.
Because of the surgical manipulation of muscle required during this procedure, significant postoperative pain used to be a problem. Fortunately, the pain can be virtually eliminated with the use of what we refer to as the "pain pump," which is a tiny catheter inserted at the time of surgery. The pain pump drips Novocain right onto the affected muscle 24 hours a day to relieve virtually all the muscle pain and avoid the need for heavy drugs or narcotics by mouth. This means a more comfortable, quicker, and better quality of recovery!
