If you find that your breasts are sagging due to age, genetics, childbearing, or weight loss, a breast lift in Englewood, NJ with board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Richard D’Amico may be just the thing to make your breasts a bit perkier.
What is Breast Lift Surgery (Mastopexy)?
Depending upon the amount of natural breast tissue you have, you may wish to have Dr. D’Amico fill out your breasts as well by placing breast implants during your breast lift. Conversely, some women who initially desire a breast augmentation find that a lift will also be necessary to get the best result.
To find out how a breast lift with or without implants can improve your contours, request a consultation with Dr. D’Amico using his online form or call to schedule an appointment.
Who Is An Ideal Candidate for Breast Lift Surgery?
Although breast lift surgery, or mastopexy, can be a good choice for many different women, the ideal candidates include those who:
- Are bothered by sagging breasts. A variety of factors can contribute to breast sagginess, or “ptosis.” These include having very large breasts, past pregnancy, weight loss, and aging. If your nipples point downward or extend below your breast crease, you’re likely a candidate for a breast lift. If sagginess is a by-product of large, pendulous breasts, you may instead be a good candidate for breast reduction or a combination of the 2. During your consultation, Dr. D’Amico examines your breast tissue and helps you decide on the right approach for your body.
- Are generally healthy. Prospective patients should be healthy enough to undergo general anesthesia and properly care for themselves after surgery. If you are older than 35, we ask that you undergo a mammogram prior to surgery. This helps us get an “original mapping” of your breasts as they appeared prior to your surgery. If any abnormalities are found in the mammogram, they must be treated before surgery. Additionally, women interested in undergoing breast lift should be nonsmokers or willing to quit prior to surgery.
- Are over 18. It’s important for the breasts to be fully developed before undergoing any type of surgical breast enhancement.
Breast Lift Without Implants
As an individual procedure, a mastopexy is appropriate for women who are satisfied with the size of their breasts but unhappy with their sagging or drooping.

Can A Breast Lift Be Combined With Breast Augmentation?
Although breast lift surgery is commonly combined with breast augmentation, it can also be done as a solitary procedure. The amount and condition of your existing breast tissue as well as your desired goals will determine which option is best for you.
For women who have some sagging and would like their breasts to be larger, a mastopexy with implants is recommended. Some patients ask whether implants alone can create a lifting effect, but it’s important to understand that breast implants alone cannot measurably lift the breasts. In order to improve both size and position, a breast lift with implants is typically required. Dr. D’Amico offers a variety of breast implant options to help you get the result you want*.

How Is Mastopexy Performed?
At our New Jersey practice, a typical mastopexy, whether with or without implants, lasts between 1 and 2 hours. Dr. D’Amico prefers to perform the procedure while you are under general anesthesia in his accredited, on-site surgical facility.
The incisions Dr. D’Amico uses depend largely on the amount of sagginess you’re experiencing. This incision results in a very discreet scar, because it blends in with the natural color delineation at the areola’s edge.
Around the areola
More significant sagging may require incisions that trace around the areola and extend downward and possibly along the breast crease. Although these incisions typically result in more noticeable scarring, they provide Dr. D’Amico with greater control during surgery. The overwhelming majority of these patients feel that their scars are well worth their perky, youthful-looking surgical results. In all cases, Dr. D’Amico creates very fine incisions with careful sutures to ensure the resulting scars heal quickly and beautifully until they are nearly invisible*.

Once he makes the agreed-upon incisions, he manipulates and tightens the underlying tissue and supportive structures to position the breasts higher on the chest. Depending on the specifics of your procedure, Dr. D’Amico may adjust the position of your areolae to ensure they point forward and complement your result. If you and Dr. D’Amico have agreed that your breast lift will include breast augmentation, he places the implants below the breast tissue or chest muscle. This doesn’t create any additional scars.
Finally, he removes any excess skin and carefully closes your incisions, taking care to give you discreet results*.
Results Of Breast Lift Surgery
Although you’ll see your results immediately, you’ll also notice some bruising and swelling. If you also underwent breast augmentation, it may take some time for your implants to soften and settle. In the long term, your results are likely to endure as long as you maintain a consistent weight*.
Recovery After Breast Lift Surgery
Immediately after surgery, Dr. D’Amico fits you with a special supportive bra, which you’ll need to wear for about 2 weeks. Patietns feel well enough to get back to work and other social activities after a week. Full recovery, however, takes up to a month. Therefore, you should avoid any activities that require you to lift your arms over your head or put extraneous strain on your chest muscles, including upper-body exercises, for up to 1 month*.
