What is Eyelid Surgery (blepharoplasty)?
Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Richard D’Amico performs blepharoplasty, often called eyelid surgery, in Englewood, NJ to give women and men a refreshed, more youthful appearance. This procedure reshapes the upper and lower eyelids by removing bulging fat, extra skin and lax muscles to restore the eyes to a more youthful appearance*. Sagging upper eyelids and bags under the eyes are the two most common reasons for blepharoplasty.
This procedure does not change the shape of your eye, and will not remove “crow’s feet” or dark circles under the eyes. It is often combined with a brow lift or face lift for more complete facial rejuvenation.
Who is a Good Candidate?
Ideal candidates for eyelid rejuvenation are healthy men and women who desire a refreshed appearance to their eyes. It is also performed on patients who have a genetic disposition to saggy upper lids or puffy lower lids (“bags” under the eyes). It is also effective in patients who find that drooping upper lids interfere with their vision*.
How It’s Done
Blepharoplasty is performed under general, or local/sedation anesthesia in our accredited office surgery suite, and takes about one hour. It may be also be done in combination with a facelift, laser resurfacing, brow lift or forehead lift. The incisions in the upper lid are made in the crease of the lid. Lower lid incisions are made inside the lash line. Extra skin and fat are removed from the area and tiny sutures are used to close the incision. Sutures generally remain in place for 3-5 days and dissolve. The results of a blepharoplasty evolve over a period of several weeks.*
Recovery After Eyelid Surgery
You will have some bruising and swelling of the eyelids for about a week, and your vision may be slightly impaired for a few days due to the swelling. Dr. D’Amico will prescribe pain medications if appropriate. You will want to have cool compresses available to bring down the swelling and to ease any discomfort. We suggest that you keep your head elevated and refrain from driving until the initial swelling has gone down.
The full results of a blepharoplasty are visible in 2 to 3 weeks. Like other surgical procedures, we advise that you refrain from strenuous activity for 3 to 4 weeks to avoid any chance of injury to the eye area.*
