Lip Lift

Lip Lift Englewood NJEveryone wants shapely, kissable lips with that signature uplift in the center of the upper lip. Unfortunately few of us have those kinds of lips. We’ve tried dermal fillers, which do a good job adding volume, but they can’t raise the upper lip. In fact, too much filler can create the dreaded “duck lips” look.

A lip lift with Dr. D’Amico & Dr. Ferrauiola is a better way to go. A lip lift decreases the skin between the nose and the upper lip, raising and improving the appearance of the lips.

What Is a Lip Lift?

A straightforward and quick procedure, a lip lift with Dr. D’Amico & Dr. Ferrauiola shortens the space between the bottom of the nose and the top of the lips (aka, the philtrum). This is accomplished by taking out a gull wing-shaped strip of skin. This raises the vermilion border, accentuates the Cupid’s Bow, and makes the lips look more enhanced, beautiful and natural.

Who Is a Good Candidate for a Lip Lift?

This surgery is great for younger and older patients alike. In younger patients, this procedure enhances the lips without the obvious volume increase with dermal fillers. By adding definition and contour to the upper lip, a lip lift can provide a more natural result. For older patients, as we age, our upper lip loses volume and increases in length, straightening in the center. This procedure effectively shortens the upper lip by gently pulling the skin upward in the Cupid’s Bow area.

There is no age requirement and this surgery is easily tolerated and has a short recovery, so anyone who would like their upper lip to have more contour and shape is a good candidate.

Does a Lip Lift Make Your Lips Bigger?

This procedure does not add volume to the lips — that’s what dermal fillers do, and that’s what often creates a plastic, over-plumped look. The end result of a lip lift is subtle, but very effective. By reducing the skin between the nose and the upper lip this simply brings the upper lip up, turning the Cupid’s Bow upward and adding contour and sensuality.

How Is a Lip Lift Done?

This procedure only takes about 30 minutes. Patients usually only require local anesthetic, although sedation is available if desired. Dr. D’Amico & Dr. Ferrauiola make an incision in the junction between the nose and the skin above the upper lip. The incision shape is usually like a gull wing, but it can be modified depending on the characteristics of the individual patient’s lips. If the corners of the patients’ mouth droop, the incision can extend further into the groove between the nose and the mouth, the nasolabial crease.

Can a Lip Lift Be Combined with Dermal Fillers?

While a patient may opt to both increase the contour with this surgery and add volume with injection of a dermal filler, many patients are happy with the natural results of this surgery alone. Plus, many patients who have tried dermal filler injections in the lips tire of the need to repeat them every nine months to maintain their results.

Will I Have a Visible Scar After a Lip Lift?

No, Dr. D’Amico & Dr. Ferrauiola place the incision where the nose meets the skin above the upper lip, so it becomes virtually invisible after healing.

Is a Lip Lift Part of a Facelift?

No, facelifts work outward from the cheeks and midface area toward the ears, lifting the skin and support structures where they have sunken due to aging. Facelift also target the jowls and upper neck. The upper lip is not addressed with a facelift.

What Is Recovery like After a Lip Lift?

You will have some swelling for about one week around the incision, although this can last longer in some patients. There will also be bruising for a week or so. Pain is not acute, and you probably won’t need prescription pain medication, just ice and Tylenol. Stitches are removed in one week. After that, your upper lip will have some tenderness, but that will continue to lessen.

What Are the Risks with a Lip Lift?

This is not a difficult surgery and it presents few risks. This is surgery, so the risks of infection and the like are there, but these are rare. Patients can have a feeling that their upper lip feels tight, as if there is a slight pulling sensation, but this usually only lasts about three days. Otherwise, this is a safe procedure when performed by Dr. D’Amico & Dr. Ferrauiola.
