Types of Liposuction Offered by Richard A. D’Amico Plastic Surgery

Englewood plastic surgeons Dr. Rich D’Amico and Dr. Julie Ferrauiola specialize in the following types of liposuction surgery:

Tumescent Liposuction:

The tumescent technique for liposuction is the most common method because it is safe and effective. In tumescent liposuction, a large volume of tumescent solution, which contains lidocaine, epinephrine, and intravenous fluid, is injected into the areas of unwanted fat. Dr. D’Amico & Dr. Ferrauiola then removes this fat from the body by suctioning it through a long, narrow tube called a cannula. The advantages of the tumescent solution include:

  • Engorging the tissue so that it is firm and easy to remove
  • Controlling pain
  • Shrinking capillaries to inhibit bleeding and minimize blood loss

When performed correctly and conservatively by a trained, experienced plastic surgeon such as Dr. D’Amico & Dr. Ferrauiola, tumescent liposuction is an extremely safe technique. HydraSolve and Liposuction:

Today, there are a variety of methods available to make fat removal easier during the liposuction process including vibration and laser and ultrasound energy. Dr. D’Amico was one of the first plastic surgeons to offer HydraSolve®. This liposuction enhancement uses warm, low-pressure water, a specially designed cannula, and gentle suction to make fat removal more precise and reduce recovery time. The advanced HydraSolve technique can be used to remove fat from the same areas as tumescent liposuction.

During your consultation, Dr. D’Amico & Dr. Ferrauiola will talk with you about the improvements you want. He will examine the areas you want treated and determine whether HydraSolve or tumescent liposuction is best suited for your unique anatomy and needs*.

Am I an Ideal Candidate for Liposuction Surgery?

At our practice in Englewood, New Jersey, ideal liposuction candidates are healthy men and women who have a localized collection of fat that remains despite good diet and regular exercise. Common areas include:

  • Abdomen
  • Flanks (the “love handles”)
  • Upper back area (women sometimes call this “back fat”)
  • Thighs, both outer thighs (sometimes called “saddle bags”) and inner thighs
  • Neck and under the chin

This procedure is not a substitute for healthy weight loss. It cannot achieve significant weight loss best accomplished with diet and exercise. It can remove localized areas of stubborn fat which may be resistant to weight loss. If you have loose skin and muscle tissue in addition to excess fat in your abdominal area, Dr. D’Amico & Dr. Ferrauiola may also recommend combining liposuction with a tummy tuck.

How is Liposuction Performed?

Dr. D’Amico & Dr. Ferrauiola performs liposuction in the Englewood, NJ area as an outpatient procedure in his nationally accredited (AAAASF), on-site surgical facility. He may use local anesthetic with sedation or general anesthetic. This depends on the size and number of areas being treated and whether he is performing liposuction along with other plastic surgery procedures.

Dr. D’Amico & Dr. Ferrauiola begins the liposuction procedure by thoroughly infusing fat in the targeted areas with tumescent solution. Next, he inserts the cannula through tiny incisions that he places in natural folds and creases of the body whenever possible to disguise the resulting scars (which will be very fine and short). Dr. D’Amico & Dr. Ferrauiola then breaks up and suctions out the fat with back-and-forth movements of the cannula. He takes special care to sculpt the areas gradually to ensure smooth, even results. Once fat removal is complete, Dr. D’Amico & Dr. Ferrauiola closes the tiny incisions with surgical tape or sutures. The anesthetic contained in the tumescent solution provides pain relief for about 12 to 24 hours after surgery.*

What Results Can I Expect from a Liposuction Procedure?

Immediately after surgery, you may notice some swelling and bruising. Once this swelling and bruising subsides, typically in about a week, your results will show. Full results may take a month or two to show as the swelling continues to subside. Because of the cannula used, scarring is almost non-existent as large incisions are not needed. To keep your results beautiful for years to come, it is recommended that you follow a healthy diet and exercise regimen.

What is the Recovery from Liposuction Surgery?

After liposuction, there will be some drainage that remains under the skin. A postoperative garment can be helpful in achieving the results. Downtime depends on the amount of fat removed but generally ranges from 4 to 7 days from work*. You should avoid strenuous exercise or heavy activity for 2 to 3 weeks, after which you will feel well enough to resume normal activities. Within a week patients can walk on the treadmill and participate in other mild activity. Dr. D’Amico & Dr. Ferrauiola will advise you of the appropriate activity level at your first postoperative visit.

Are There Risks to a Liposuction Procedure?

As Liposuction is a surgical procedure, you must be aware of the usual risks associated with surgery. In addition to this, Liposuction may specifically pose the risk of:

  • Loose or rippled skin
  • Asymmetry or contour irregularities
  • Pigmentation irregularities

Dr. D’Amico & Dr. Ferrauiola will discuss your desired outcome with you during your consultation and will make you aware of any possible risks. If extremely large amounts of fat are removed, Dr. D’Amico & Dr. Ferrauiola may recommend additional surgery to remove excess skin known as a tummy tuck.
